If you are not familiar with the Environmental Working Group you may be wondering why I am so passionate about ensuring that all of Honestly Naturals products ingredients have only a rating 1-2 on their hazard scale.

Who is the EWG?

The EWG is a non-profit, non-partisan organisation that is dedicated to protecting human and environmental health. They have a team of scientists, policy experts, lawyers, communication experts and programmers. This team work tirelessly to make sure someone is standing up for public health when the government and industry won’t.

Unfortunately, our cosmetic and chemical industries are not as regulated as they should be and many toxic chemicals are allowed to be used in products that we use everyday. The EWG researches scientific data, literature and studies from government agencies, industry panels, academic institutions, or other credible bodies. They use this data to determine what is safe and what is not for humans and our environment.

The EWG’s mission is to help educate consumers and therefore enable them to make safer, more informed choices about the products that they are buying and the companies that they purchase them from.

They do this through a wide variety of campaigns, reports, databases and mobile applications. One such database that they created back in 2004 is called Skin Deep. This is an electronic product database which contains over 74,000 ingredients that are used in personal care products.

So what do the ratings mean?

For every product and ingredient in Skin Deep, there’s a two-part score – a hazard score and a data availability score. The latter of these is related to how much data is available based on the research that has been carried out for the ingredients, as not all cosmetic chemicals have been studied thoroughly.

If an ingredient has NO data then we do our own research at Honestly Natural, we look into the origin of the ingredient, talk with suppliers and manufacturers too see if it is in fact safe. A lot of the time we will say no to that ingredient if there is not enough data – better to be safe than sorry I always say!

The product/ingredient hazard score is on a scale from 1-10 and reflects known and suspected hazards of ingredients based on the EWG’s research methods as mentioned earlier.

1-2 is the most ideal rating as it means that there is a low hazard and therefore the product/ingredient is regarded as safe for you to use. Whereas a rating of 7- 10 rating means that the product/ingredient could be potentially dangerous for you as it is considered highly hazardous. Ingredients with NO data also pull a 1-2 so be weary.

We ensure that all the products we choose to sell at Honestly Natural have a rating of only 1-2 on the EWG hazard score and have enough data to suggest it is safe. This means you can be sure that they are likely to be the very safest choice available for you.

Please read the EWGs Legal disclaimer to understand all of the EWG’s ins and outs.
